Their bodies moved together in a timeless, magical rhythm, her liquid heat enveloping him as the rapture grew stronger, as all reason was replaced by stunning physical sensation. Desire and passion and need joined into a surging force that swept them into a vortex of mindless, yearning tension that exploded suddenly, sending them both into a realm of wondrous pleasure.
Nick collapsed against her, burying his head in the hollow of her shoulder, and Candy hugged him tightly to her. Their bodies still joined, they shared kisses and love words as they slowly drifted back to earth.
Languid and mellow in the sweet aftermath of their passion, it was easy for her to say the words usually held in check by her wary reserve. She felt so close to him. Only with Nick did she ever approach the blissful state of true intimacy. "I love you, Nick." She kissed his neck, stroking his hair, his face, with loving hands.
"Never let me go again."
"Maybe we should put that in writing," he said lightly, his eyes gleaming with humor. "Do you think such a document would hold up in court, Your Honor?"
Candy managed a smile. His lighthearted mood didn't match her own. She felt intense, earnest, seriously committed. She wanted him to return her declaration of love. She wanted his dark gaze to be deep and soul-ful, not brimming with amusement. She wanted him to—her heart seemed to stop and then start again at double time—she wanted him to ask her to marry him.
Again. And this time, for the first time ever, she knew that her answer would be an unqualified yes.
But Nick didn't say those magic words. He kissed her temple, then carefully withdrew from her, rose, and went into the bathroom. When he returned and lay down on his back, Candy snuggled close, resting her head on his shoulder, slipping one leg over his. His arms came around to tuck her against him, and he closed his eyes with a sigh of contentment.
Candy's brows narrowed. Was he going to fall asleep?
